On May 15, Maybelline will mark 10 decades of non-stop beauty, as they celebrate 100 years!!
In 1913, young Chicago chemist Thomas Williams had a dilemma. His older sister, Maybel, was in love with a man who was in love with someone else. Maybel Williams did her best with what was available—she used petroleum jelly on her lashes and brows to enhance them. Her brother decided to help her increase her allure by adding carbon dust to the petroleum jelly, which darkened her lashes and brows more dramatically. The product worked. In 1915, Maybel got her man and Thomas founded what would become the global industry giant, Maybelline, named after the bride and her favourite beauty aid.
Two years later, Williams introduced Maybelline Cake Mascara, the first modern eye cosmetic made for everyday use. Initially available only through mail order, it was so popular that women began to ask for it in drugstores. The signature red Eyebrow Pencil followed, along with coloured eyeshadows and complementary eyeliners, leading the youthful, flapper fashion trend of dramatic makeup. Maybelline became the first cosmetic company to advertise on radio and sales boomed. In 1932, responding to incessant demand, Maybelline introduced a special 10-cent package of Cake Mascara for retail sale. And the rest, as they say, is history!
To celebrate, Maybelline has released The Queen of New York Collection with Limited Edition packaging for both permanent products as well as new Limited Edition products. The products in this collection feature a graphic of the New York skyline on the packaging. Here are a couple pictures of the displays:
There are 5 new limited edition lipsticks released with this collection. The display only had 2 shades, which I gladly picked up. They are Strike a Rose and Purposeful Mauve:
Strike a Rose
A gorgeous frosty peachy-pink shade with gold sheen. It glides on so smoothly, does not feel gritty at all. It is like Nars Orgasm in lipstick form!! I was worried that I wouldn’t like it because I’m not a shimmer, sparkle kind of gal…..but I LOVE it. It’s a beautiful shade for the spring/summer.
A very wearable warm mauve shade. It is very creamy and smooth. It swatches darker than it wears, and truly is a flattering shade for a lot of skin tones.
There are 2 new Limited Edition Baby Lips and I picked up Ra-Ra Red. I picked this shade because I thought it would be nice to have a red balm for summer and I’m a sucker for names, what can I say!
Don’t let the name fool you. It doesn’t wear as dark as it looks in the bullet. It’s a nice soft shade of a pinky-red, perfect for the summer ahead. It has what I would describe as a grapefruit scent and is very hydrating.
Lastly, there are 4 new Limited Edition Colour Molten Eyeshadow Duos. I picked up the colour Rose Rush. These colour molten eyeshadows have been out for a while now, but this is my first time trying this formula. The formula provides a shadow that is sheer and lightweight. It is a cream eyeshadow, feels so lightweight on your lids…almost as though you aren’t wearing a shadow. The pigmentation isn’t 100%. You need to apply a few layers. I found it was best applied with my finger. The staying power wasn’t bad.
I really do like the brown in this duo. It is a matte, and looks great as a crease colour. I didn’t care very much for the pink, as it was quite sheer. Because it’s so sheer and has a hint of shimmer in it, it could be used as a highlighter for your face.
There are also 2 new Limited Edition Nail Polishes with this collection, but my interest wasn’t sparked with them. Hey, it’s Spring and soon to be Summer, and I want pinks, teals, lavender etc.
Overall, I would suggest the lipsticks from this collection. Also, all you Baby Lips fans out there, you need to pick them up, even if just for the packaging.
I look forward to seeing what other Collections might possibly be released to celebrate 100 years. I would LOVE to see new Colour Tattoos wouldn’t you?
Happy Birthday Maybelline!!
